Each month Beertasteslike will choose a featured beer style category from the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) Style Guidelines. These guidelines are used in any major beer competition, pro and amateur. This year the BJCP has actually revised these guidelines for the first time in 8 years. The India Pale Ale category, for instance, went from three sub styles to seven. There’s even a category for American Wild Ale now and, of course, European Sour Ale too!
For our inaugural selection we chose Categories 24 and 25 from the revised 2015 guidelines. Category 24 is Belgian Ale which includes; (24A) Witbier, (24B) Belgian Pale Ale and (24C) Bière de Garde. Category 25 is Strong Belgian Ale and this category includes; (25A) Belgian Blond Ale, (25B) Saison and (25C) Belgian Golden Strong Ale.
We chose these categories because we felt that many of these beers are best enjoyed in the heat of summer, and since its July there's no better time. Throughout the month we will focus on these beers through different content to fully realize the potential of these two wonderful Belgian styles.
We look forward to drinking them with you!
